Tungsten, also known as wolfram [as it comes from wolframite] is both hard and brittle, which makes it relatively difficult to machine. However, the material does offer one of the highest melting points of all known elements [melting at 6,192° F], one of the lowest coefficients of thermal expansion, offers one of the lowest vapor pressures, and offers extremely high tensile strengths. As a result, the material is frequently used in making high-speed cutting tools, heating and furnace applications, arc welding applications, armaments, munitions, and radiation shielding.
